Our commitment focuses on prevention, awareness, education, and response. A robust program of resources and personnel are maintained to support these efforts, as well as, strong partnerships with community agencies and organizations to offer extended and external support.


Plan Ahead

GVPD provides a Safewalk Program for on campus pedestrians. To request a Safewalk (Allendale Campus and Grand Rapids Campuses), call 616-331-3255.

Students, faculty, and staff can ride any Rapid bus route for free with a GVSU ID card.

GVPD is equipped with tools to help with unforeseen vehicle complications on campus. Services are free of charge and include:

  • Battery jump starts
  • Vehicle unlocks
  • Local service recommendations to assist with flat tires

The GVPD active shooter response resource provides guidance to individuals who may be caught in an active shooter situation, and discusses how to react when law enforcement responds. 

GVSU is committed to being a safe and healthy environment for all. This includes students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors, especially those who are minors. As a public university open to everyone, the university welcomes children and teenagers on our campuses for a variety of programs and activities planned by the university or by outside organizations. In all situations, adults are expected to be positive role models for minors, acting in a respectful and responsible manner consistent with the mission and values of the university. To promote this vision, the university publishes and enforces policies, procedures, guidelines, and resources that have the goal of promoting health, safety, and security for minors on our campuses.

Health & Well-Being

If you find yourself worried about the well-being of a GVSU student (a student in your class, someone you live with/near, someone in your student organization, etc.), we encourage you to submit a CARE referral.

The University Counseling Center provides short-term individual and long-term group therapy at no cost to currently registered GVSU students. Urgent Situation or Crisis.

The Metro Health GVSU Campus Health Center is a full-service, on-campus health center for GVSU students, faculty, and staff.

ENCOMPASS Employee Assistance Program (1-800-952-3586), coordinated by Human Resources Health & Wellness, provides GVSU faculty, staff, and their dependents with access to free counseling sessions.

In February 2018, the Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board through the Campus Sexual Assault workgroup convened by Sue Snyder in 2017, released the following resource handbook for survivors of campus sexual assault. Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

The 2018 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes crime statistics, fire statistics, safety and security policies.

The Department of Public Safety maintains a daily crime log for the Allendale and Grand Rapids Campuses that can be reviewed in person during normal business hours.

When made aware of criminal incidents occurring at other non-campus locations, the department records the statistics accordingly. A printed copy will be provided upon request by contacting the Grand Valley Police Department at 616-331-3255.
