The SVA at GVSU will be holding meetings at both the PEW and ALLENDALE campuses this semester. The first meetings of the winter semester will be this week.

Allendale Campus (Kirkhof) Every Friday at 5pm in the Veterans' Lounge

Are you attending GVSU Commencement ceremonies on December 10, 2016 at Van Andel Arena?

If you serve(d) in the US Armed Forces, and were not able to pick up your special red, white, and blue recognition cord at GradFest, don't worry!

You can still get your cord from the Dean of Students Office, 202 Student Services Building, Allendale Campus, or the Pew Campus Career Center, 101B DeVos Center, GR Campus!

The Office of President Thomas Haas provides these cords at no charge to eligible students.

Homemade Scented Candle Sale Fundraising event

Student Veterans of America GVSU Chapter (SVA-GV) is selling candles to raise funds to send student veterans to the annual SVA-GV National Convention! 

The candles are 100% soy wax, and burn clean for approximately 30 hours! We also have wax warming plates with scented wax in jars (No flame, child, and pet safe!). The candles and warmers are all homemade by one of our board members. 

The sale will be held on Wednesday, December 7th from 12-3pm, main floor of Kirkhof Center, GVSU's Allendale Campus. 

Please stop by, pick up some great holiday gifts, and support your GVSU Student Veterans!

If you serve(d) in any branch of the US Armed Forces, President Thomas J. Haas will be hosting the Sixth Annual Veterans Day Breakfast as he recognizes Grand Valley State University students, faculty, and staff who have served in the US Armed Forces. 

Breakfast will be served at 8:00 a.m. with brief remarks at 8:15 a.m., on Friday, November 11, 2016, in the Perry Dining Room, located in the Grand Valley State University Alumni House and Visitor Center on the Allendale Campus.

Did you know that President Thomas J. Haas, Grand Valley State University’s fourth president, is a retired captain with 23 years of commissioned service in the U. S. Coast Guard.

Dr. Haas has degrees from the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, the University of Michigan, Rensselaer Institute of Technology (New York), and the University of Connecticut. Haas has held fellowships at Western Michigan University and Yale, and received an honorary doctorate degree from Kingston University in the U.K. He is an internationally recognized expert in hazardous material transportation, strategic planning and higher education leadership, and has published numerous articles in a variety of journals.

Military Recognition Cords for Commencement, April 2016 2016-03-10 00:00:00.0

Are you a student veteran graduating this semester? As a student veteran, you are entitled to wear the GVSU Military Recognition Cord for your Commencement Ceremony.


As a courtesy provided by President Haas, every graduating student who has served, or currently serves, in any of the five branches of the US Armed Forces, is entitled to receive and wear a red, white, and blue Recognition Cord to his/her Commencement Ceremony.

If you have served in the US Armed Forces, will be earning your degree and attending Commencement at Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids, MI, you are eligible to receive this Cord.

Again, the only requirements to receive your FREE Patriotic Recognition Cord are that you:

a) Will be participating in the University’s Commencement Ceremony on April 30, 2016

b) Personally served in the US Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard

c) Present a valid photo ID (non-military OK) to verify your identity 


Cords are available at the Dean of Students Office (202 STU - Allendale Campus) or from Steven Lipnicki (101B - DeVos Campus).
