Financial Aid

Dropping or Withdrawing from Classes

The Withdrawal Policy Regarding Tuition and Fees states that students who register for classes for any given semester are obligated to pay full tuition and fees for that semester unless they officially withdraw from the university. If you begin classes at Grand Valley, receive financial aid, and then withdraw, your financial aid will be adjusted according to federal regulations.

Visit with a financial aid counselor or contact our office for more information regarding your specific situation.

Drop Classes

  • If you drop credits during the drop/add period (100 percent refund) but are still enrolled, your eligibility for aid will be recalculated based on the new number of credits. You will be billed for any funds you received but were not eligible for based on your new credit load.

  • If you drop credits during 75 percent refund period but are still enrolled, the Financial Aid Office will determine if you will receive the tuition refund or if your financial aid will be reduced. This determination is based on specific requirements of federal, state, and institutional programs. Dropping credits may also place you in jeopardy of not meeting the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.

Complete Withdraw

  • If you completely withdraw from Grand Valley after you have already received your financial aid you are eligible for a tuition refund. The refund will first go back into the financial aid account from which you were originally awarded. You may not receive the refund.

  • If you completely withdraw during the drop/add period (100 percent refund), your financial aid will be cancelled. You will be billed for any funds not paid back to the financial aid account by the refund (i.e. balance checks received and not returned and/or housing charges not refunded).

  • If you completely withdraw before 60 percent of the semester is complete, you will be required to repay a portion of your federal student aid based on a federal formula.
